2 Days in Northern Slovenia Itinerary

If you have a few days in northern Slovenia, I highly recommend adding Lake Bled and Vintgar Gorge to your itinerary. While they're often overlooked by travelers visiting Ljubljana or passing through Slovenia to get to Croatia, these two destinations ended up being some of our favorite experiences in the country.

We spent a couple of days exploring Lake Bled and nearby Vintgar Gorge, and both were absolutely worth it. Most people have heard of Lake Bled, but surprisingly few know about Vintgar Gorge—even though it's one of Slovenia's most spectacular natural attractions.

Day 1: Explore the Fairytale Beauty of Lake Bled

Lake Bled is one of Slovenia's most iconic destinations, famous for its emerald-green waters, storybook island church, and dramatic alpine scenery. Surrounded by the Julian Alps and overlooked by a medieval castle perched high on a cliff, it's easy to see why it's considered one of the most beautiful places in Europe.

We stayed in a lovely apartment within walking distance of the lake, restaurants, and town center—making it an ideal base for exploring.

How to Spend One Day at Lake Bled

1. Walk Around Lake Bled

Start your day with the scenic 6 km (3.7-mile) loop around the lake. The mostly flat trail takes about 90 minutes at a relaxed pace and offers constantly changing views of Lake Bled, the island, and the surrounding mountains.

If you're up for a short but steep hike, take the trail up to Ojstrica Viewpoint. In just 20–30 minutes, you’ll be rewarded with the classic postcard view of Lake Bled—complete with the island church, Bled Castle, and the Julian Alps in the background. It's easily the best viewpoint around the lake. Start the trek up to the view point at the Ojstrica Trailhead

2. Visit Bled Island

No trip to Lake Bled is complete without visiting the Church of the Assumption. Hop aboard a traditional wooden pletna boat, explore the charming island, and don't forget to ring the famous wishing bell for good luck!

3. Where to Have Dinner

There are plenty of great dining options around the lake. A couple of spots we highly recommend:

  • Promenada Burger: The burgers were delicious, the prices were reasonable, and the service was top-notch.

  • Špica Restaurant & Bar: Located just a short walk from our apartment, this was a fantastic spot where a live Slovenian band played traditional music late into the night.

4. End the Day with Cake & Sunset

Cap off your day with a glass of wine and a slice of Lake Bled’s famous cream cake (kremšnita) at one of the lakeside cafés. Watching the sun set behind Bled Castle while enjoying dessert was easily one of our favorite memories in Slovenia.

Day 2: Visit Vintgar Gorge

Just 10 minutes from Lake Bled, Vintgar Gorge is one of Slovenia's most spectacular natural attractions. A series of wooden boardwalks and bridges wind through the 1.6 km (1-mile) gorge, offering incredible views of the emerald-green Radovna River, towering limestone cliffs, rushing rapids, and crystal-clear pools.

The trail ends at the impressive Šum Waterfall, the largest river waterfall in Slovenia. Plan to spend about 2 to 3 hours exploring the gorge and returning via one of the scenic loop trails. If you're visiting Lake Bled, this unforgettable hike is well worth adding to your itinerary!

💡 Pro Tip: The gorge boardwalk is one-way only! Once you reach Šum Waterfall, you'll choose one of two marked return trails back to the parking area: the scenic route through St. Katarina with rolling valley views, or the forest trail that loops back through the trees.
